STUBBORN
Life’s journey was full of twists and turns for Ja’len, growing up. He remembers having a lot of fun and freedom, but it was bittersweet. He became ungrateful and careless – never fully appreciating the gifts and guidance around him.
“Reflecting back, there weren’t real consequences… just a lot of punishment and pain.”
Ja’len seldom took his education seriously and would often bring home failing grades. He believed everything he wanted would come his way regardless of how much effort he put in.
RECHLESS ROAD
High school brought a mix of friends who introduced Ja’len to the street life. The thrilling danger stoked his rebellious side. He soon found himself making risky decisions that got him into situations he never thought he’d have to face.
“I thought I was untouchable and that even a bullet couldn’t stop me.”
One night, after a reckless series of choices, Ja’len crashed his car while fleeing from the police. The 10 minute scramble ended with his arrest at gunpoint and potentially facing two years in jail for a DUI, evading the police, and possession of a firearm. He felt like his life was over, and his family’s disappointment was too much to bear.
TWIST OF FATE
Eventually, Ja’len was given a second chance with a two year probation. But he still felt lost. After probation ended, Ja’len was stuck and lacked purpose. Jobs were hard to find, and he would cope with old destructive habits.
Hope would find Ja’len one day on the corner of Willow & Nees. Sitting on a bench after a long walk to clear his mind, a Hope Now recruiter handed him a card, and asked Ja’len if he was looking for a job. This chance encounter sparked a journey of transformation.
LEVELING UP
Since joining Hope Now, Ja’len has been on a new path marked by growth and learning. With the support of mentors who have walked in his shoes, he’s discovering the strength to pursue his goals and take responsibility for his future.
“I’m careful with what I consume. I’m cautious with who I’m around. The Creator flows through all creation and all life; that source is present.”
Today, Ja’len is achieving significant milestones through Hope Now. He’s earned his driver’s license, works full-time with Hope Now’s food truck and carpet cleaning, and is taking part in an IT apprenticeship with Back2Work. He’s committing to bettering himself in every area of his life.
