Gilbert | Building A Family Of Freedom

CHILD OF CHAOS

Gilbert’s life commenced amidst chaos and strife. Born in Palm Springs to young teenage parents, his early years were characterized by instability, heartbreak, and abuse. After his parents parted ways when he was eight, his anger intensified. He witnessed addiction, toxic relationships, and emotional turmoil engulf his home. By the time he reached nine, he was already seeking ways to escape and roam the streets.

TO BE SEEN AND RECOGNIZED

As a teenager, Gilbert became deeply involved in gang life and eventually entered the juvenile justice system. He spent years in group homes and in the California Youth Authority. The anger carried from childhood intensified. Violence became a way of life.

“I was trying to make a name for myself. I wanted people to fear me.“

After being released and paroled to Fresno, Gilbert quickly found himself homeless. Burdened by years of pain, bitterness, and unresolved trauma, he had no clear direction and nowhere to turn. It was in this state that he found Hope Now, a place that became much more than a job program.

NOT GIVING UP

Hope Now was different. For Gilbert, it became the first place where people saw beyond his anger and believed there was something greater in him. The path wasn’t easy. All his pain surfaced in the program, and conflict often erupted. In fact, many fights that broke out during Hope Now’s early years involved Gilbert. Where others would have walked away, Hope Now kept investing in him.

“They never turned their back on me. They didn’t give up on me.“

His Hope Now mentors even challenged him to write out his life story and share it publicly. It was the first time Gilbert had confronted the years of buried pain. Gilbert excavated his childhood wounds, the source of his anger, and the poor choices that negatively impacted his life. Through Hope Now, Gilbert found more than just work; he found people who genuinely cared. And ultimately, he found healing, freedom, and truth.

A NEW LEGACY

Today, he and his wife are building a new future together. The cycle that once defined his family has been broken: his children are thriving, one with a master’s degree and another teaching in Fresno Unified, and now they are parents themselves.
